Insurance Information

Dental insurance plays an important role in helping people obtain dental treatment. Since we strongly feel our patients deserve the best possible dental care we can provide, and in an effort to maintain that high quality care, we would like to share some facts about dental insurance with you.

You may receive a letter from your insurance company stating that dental fees are higher than usual and customary, or U&C. An insurance company surveys a geographic area, finds the average fee, and takes 90% of that fee and considers it customary. Included in the survey are discount clinics which will bring down the average. Any doctor in private practice will typically have fees that are considered higher than "average." Dental insurance is not designed to be a "pay-for-all." It is only meant to be an aid.
Many plans tell their insured they will be covered "up to 80% or 100%", but do not clearly specify plan fee schedule allowances, annual maximums, or limitations. Please be aware of your plan's limitations and coverage. We only know the basic outline of your plan unless you provide us with a more comprehensive look. After fee schedule allowances, annual maximums, deductibles, and limitations, we have found that the average 100% coverage plan actually provides only 50-65% coverage.

As a courtesy to our insured patients, we are happy to help facilitate insurance payment by filing dental claims and we accept assignment of benefits for direct payment. We also help to estimate dental benefits prior to treatment and will provide you with a written treatment plan of procedure, estimated dental insurance, and out-of-pocket expense. Our estimate is based on the information you provide to us about your plan. Please note that your dental insurance is a contract between you and the insurance company, not between your dentist and the insurance company.
